| Carpark North - visit SPOT 11 with a new album in tow | | Over the last couple of months, dozens of new acts have been added to the programme of this year’s SPOT Festival. But there are still some goodies left in the bag. Big Danish and Scandinavian stars, but also – as is always the case with SPOT – dynamic prodigies from the lush Danish rock growth layer. And on top of it all, a couple of significant show case stages and a range of fascinating contributions from the periphery of the mainstream.
Among the big names, one finds Carpark North a magnificent Danish crowd pleaser with international ambitions. In their home country Norway, the pop/rock icons of Jim Stärk and Morten Abel as well as the new wave punk rockers of Surferosa are just as prominent, selling thousands of albums and getting excellent reviews.
In the undergrowth, we find bands with album releases in the near future, such as Sarah Hepburn and Spleen United. Incidentally both these acts are releasing their albums on Copenhagen Records. However, also resourceful do-it-yourself bands such as Marvin’s Revolt, Cartridge, Entakt, and Green Concorde are going to prove their worth at SPOT 11, and show us the future of Danish rock.
| Swedish Süperstar Orkestar: Brass to the max | | The fact that SPOT 11 easily tops 100 gigs is the result of close collaboration between ROSA – The Danish Rock Council and various music institutions and associations, bookers, and record companies to present upcoming artists and new acts with international aspirations on SPOT 11.
To represent the World music genre, the Danish World Music Association and WMC have selected a range of bands from four Scandinavian countries. All these bands pick up their inspiration far away from the English-language mainstream. Swedish Superstar Orkestar delve into the unrestrained dance music of the Balkan countries, Finnish Nagwetch & Wabanag explore Canadian Shaman-folk, Norwegian Mambo Compañeros engage in the hot rhythms of Latin America, and Danish Highlife Orchestra and Shungu devote themselves to the tones and drums of Africa.
Danish folk music is also represented at SPOT 11 thanks to The Danish Folk Council. Afenginn are exponents of an energetic “bastard ethno” sound, and once again Balkan music is the main source of inspiration. Morild on their part engage in an exciting fusion of folk music and jazz.
| Brothers Olesen-Olesen perform at the DUP Stage | | As was the case at SPOT 10, the Association of Independent Record Companies (DUP) gets it own stage where the independent companies can showcase their artists. Most musical genres will be represented on this stage, ranging from Nicolai Munch’s modern jazz and The Mopeds’ joyful indie rock to The Psyke Project and their brutal hardcore metal. Other artists on the DUP stage include as diverse names as Olesen-Olesen, Gravy, Aron, Turbulens, Red Ink, Ghost Rocket, and Green Pitch.
Finally, Scandinavian Booking and Management is going to present a range of prominent Danish names with ambitions extending far beyond the Danish market. At the Scandinavian Stage at the Aarhus venue Train there will be performances by rock cruiserweights such as Danish Kitty Wu and Norwegian Span, fascinating upcoming names – Odessa and Utah, and even mainstream pop stars such as the Faroese Lena and the Greenland Julie.
