SPOT 11 Opening Night

9/6 20:00 - Musikhuset Aarhus, Store Sal

On Thursday 9th June, the SPOT 11 Festival will be celebrated with an opening concert. Four esteemed Danish singers and songwriters and a Faeroese colleague will enter into unorthodox and genre-crossing collaborations with the classical string quartet Ensemble MidtVest. Each songwriter is going to present four or five songs - both well-known songs as well as some "secret gems". Some have been chosen by the artists themselves - others have been included on request from the string quartet, because they felt they had something special to contribute to that particular track. In other words, both parties have something at stake. This project first saw the light of day in September 2004 during the Bornholm Culture Week and the response was ecstatic. Now we are taking it a step further with Faeroese Eivør Pálsdóttir as "the new girl in the class, whose North Atlantic background and dramatic expression fit splendidly into this context," says Steffen Brandt, the artistic leader of the project.

Steffen Brandt
Steffen Brandt is the experienced and highly respected leader of the rock band TV-2, who keep adding to their popularity and underlining their significance in their humorous and loving castigations of contemporary Denmark. Of late, Steffen Brandt has ventured into collaborations with Tina Dico, Harald Haugaard, etc.

Lars H.U.G.
Lars H.U.G. was the front man of experimental/ revolutionizing Kliché, and he has maintained the curiosity and the artistic courage all the way through his impressive solo career, during which he - regardless of experiments and genre - has written countless immortal Danish classics, as can be experienced first-hand on a recent double-CD compilation.

Dicte
With Her Personal Pain, the first steps of Dicte s career took her to the very top. In her subsequent solo career, she has never been afraid of plunging into new experiments, so her solo-albums have been spiced with theatre music and the likes. Dicte is fascinated with the clash of rock and classical music.

Henriette Sennenvaldt
Vocalist of Under Byen, who have also broken through abroad with their soft, penetrating, reflective music and their atmospheric compositions over the last years. Critics - David Fricke from Rolling Stone Magazine for one - record companies, and the public have been conquered. Henriettes voice is fragile, powerful, blue, grey, sensuous - and always relevant.

Eivør Pálsdóttir
One of the most significant female vocalists in Scandinavia - carrying the stamp of Iceland, The Faeroe Islands, and North Atlantic drama, she is a genuine primordial force on stage. Having released three very different albums since 2003, she embraces both intimacy and hurricane - also on the stage. Eivør is playing at the actual SPOT 11 Festival as well.

Ensemble Midtvest - string quartet
The classical Ensemble MidtVest like to approach the classical music in innovative contexts - by means of other musical branches and other art forms - in their attempt to "find new angle". One such example is this project which sees the four strings challenge rock and pop songs.
