Music benefits radio – does radio benefit music?

Saturday | 13.00 | Lille Sal

“How do we get the radio channels to play our music?” the musicians and record companies keep asking themselves. However, a new report indicates that the question should rather be, “Why do we want them to play our music?” In fact, the report points out that too much airplay may harm the sales. Apart from the persons listed below, leading representatives from DR and the commercial radio stations will take part in the debate.

Michael Ritto
Michael Ritto is chairman of the Danish branch of IFPI which represents 95 per cent of the Danish record sales. In 1978, together with Poul Bruun, he founded the successful, independent record company Medley Records. When EMI took over Medley in 1994, Ritto followed and became managing director. In 2004, Ritto and Benny Bach formed MBO which is both a publishing house and the co-owner of labels such as Copenhagen Records, RecArt, and CMC.

Peter Jahn
Peter Jahn is a management consultant in Jahn & Co A/S and a part-time teacher at the Copenhagen Business School. He graduated as Cand. Merc from Aarhus, and his impressive career includes posts such as product manager at Tuborg, marketing chief at Egmont, and managing director of L’Oreal Denmark. Jahn presents the report from Alsted Research on the relation between airplay and CD sales figures.

Henrik Knaack
Henrik Knaack is managing director SBS Radio A/S, which is the company behind the two commercial radio stations The Voice and Radio 2. The 42-year-old Knaack has been in the radio business since 1983 – among other things, he has been in charge of Radio VLR in the years 1989-1999. For the last five years, Knaack has been the head of SBS Radio A/S

Tobias Nielsen
Tobias Nielsen is head of programmes at SBS Radio A/S (The Voice & Radio 2). He began his career in the radio business twelve years ago – highlight from his CV include being appointed as the programme controller at The Voice Funen in 1997 and then at The Voice Copenhagen in 1999. For the last three years, 33-year-old Tobias Nielsen has been head of programmes at SBS Radio A/S.

Jesper Bay (moderator)
Jesper Bay is the marketing manager of IFPI Denmark and former managing director of record companies, manager, and consultant in the music industry. He began his career in 1978 as manager of a hugely successful comedy trio. Then directorships in Genlyd, BMG, and Mega Records followed. In 1997 together with Simon Junker, he formed the management agency MusicMatters. Moreover, he is heavily involved in the Danish Music Management education.
