Most Danish bands dream of breaking through abroad, but well, how do they do when they have the much-desired contract in the bag. We are going to listen to the stories of some of the people who have achieved the contract and who are still pursuing their careers abroad. In their own way, each of them have managed to get a foothold abroad and yet discovered that the big contract and its more modest counterpart are oceans apart for better or worse.
Jesper Majdall
Jesper Majdall is the co-owner of the prolific record company Morning Records, he plays in My Friend George, and besides he has his own management firm Sidekick Impresario. He is the manager of Under Byen, who have been released on various independent labels in a range of European countries and in Japan, yet still have to pay for their recordings themselves.
Johan Wohlert
Johan Wohlert plays the bass in Mew, whose album debut “Half the World is Watching Me” was released in 1997. For the follow-up they founded their own record company in order to keep complete artistic control. At their gig at SPOT 07, they were spotted by a British talent scout, and subsequently they signed a contract with Epic Records UK. This contract ranks among the super heavyweights achieved by any Danish band.
Thomas Børresen
In 1995, after some years in the British music industry, Thomas Børresen formed Soulcamp Entertainment, which today functions as record company, publishing, and management of urban music. Børresen was behind Outlandish’s international breakthrough and he represents them in this panel. Outlandish is on BMG Denmark but via BMG’s other departments in Europe and the Middle East, they have been released in more than 15 countries.
Jakob Sørensen (moderator)
In 2004, together with three other Houdinis from EMI, Jakob Sørensen formed Copenhagen Records, which was to stake on a combination of indie and mainstream. Today he is the product manager of Copenhagen Records, and works with as popular acts as Nephew, Johnny Deluxe, Niarn, and Bikstok Røgsystem. He actively takes part in the ongoing debate on the Danish music industry, music press, etc. |
