To publish or not to publish...

Friday | 15.30 – 17.00 | Lille Sal

Many songwriters sign publishing agreements to make their music reach a wider audience. But exactly what is publishing? Is it a good idea to sign publishing agreements? Where does the money come from and where does it go? How much money can it bring the songwriter? Those are some of the questions that will be addressed. The basics of publishing will be explained, a composer will talk about his agreement, and a publisher will describe his work.

Magnus Österwall
Swedish Magnus Österwall has 15 years of experience in publishing – 10 years with BMG Music Publishing as the manager of songwriters such as Jörgen Elofsson (Britney Spears) and Johan Åberg (Christina Aguilera, Cher). Since 2004 the managing director of Danish Marvel Music/Good Songs Publishing (MBO) with Swan Lee, Johnny Deluxe etc. under its wings. Österwall will talk about the publisher’s work and how a songwriter may benefit from that work.

Sascha Dupont
Dupont is a songwriter, a musician, and a radio host. She has a publishing agreement with Ignition Music (UK) and with that agreement in the bag, she writes songs together with other composers in DK as well as London and LA, often with other artists in mind. These days however, she is saving the tracks for her coming album. She will talk about her own experiences with publishing: why she chose to sign the agreement and how it has benefited her.

Mikael Højris (moderator)
Mikael Højris is a consultant in the Danish Musicians’ Union where he takes care of counselling and legal advice in relation to record contracts, management, publishing, financing one’s own releases etc. For almost 25 years now, he has been engaged in some aspect of the music life – he has published a book on the music industry, and has a past as a musician. Højris’ opening of the panel will focus on publishing and its many aspects.
