Antophones - SPOT 11, ARoS

Antophones releases their debut-album in autumn ’05, but Saturday night a reduced version of the band gave their rather large audience an idea of what to expect when leafs are falling.

The very beautiful "Traitorsong" is worth a listen and can be found on the homepage; a fantastic hybrid of deep lyrics, gentle piano and melancholy. The trio did an intense piece of work at Aros, and even though half an hour is a very modest amount of time for a band like Antophones, they successfully proved how alternative, constructive pop should be made.

Antophones is normally a sextet, but at this year’s Spot Festival, they only performed as a trio, consisting of Johannes Hejl (bass), Katrine Hald (Rhodes) and of course singer/songwriter Lise Blaase. Antophones is visiting Spot for the second year in a robe, and they’ve lately gotten quite impressive reviews in various, reputable media, which isn’t surprising. Lise Blaase’s bright, soft and expressive voice is the Alfa and Omega in Antophones compositions, which in this occasion was supported by a simple foundation of discrete, instrumental figures from both bass and piano. The matter of the band not performing as a full orchestra wasn’t actually distracting or disappointing, but contrarily it felt really sensible in the open, calm and bright surroundings at Aros.

Review: 4 out of 6 stars
From: Århus, Denmark
Signed to: self financed album out in August
Genre and reputation: Alternative pop. Played SPOT 10-11 and is a among a top 10 of the upcoming scene in Denmark and has received remarkable reviews in most papers and underground magazines.
