By Anja Følleslev, MyMusic.dk | Foto: Didde Elnif | | Hard to explain Gramski Beat’s jazz does not contain. It is rock, freejazz and fusion jazz. Simply complex and experimental in every way.
The names of the band members in Gramski Beat tells you that this is a band that you should go and hear live if you get the chance. The band which was started in 2001 by drummer Jeppe Gram consists of Mads Hyhme (trombone), Ned Firm (saxophone & clarinet) and Nicolai Munch-Hansen. Originally the band was started because Gram wished to make a new kind of jazz in which he mixed rock and jazz. In general the feeling after hearing their concert, is that the band has accomplished its goal, because their expression was very complex and different from other kinds of experimental jazz. There were a lot of contrasts in their harmonies, especially between the wind section. At times it sounded as if they were in harmony with each other, and at other times it sounded as if they were having a fight.
The material, mostly composed by Gram, had different aspects. Their ballads could start out as very beautiful, but end up becoming a bit to complex, to messy and thereby hard for the audience to grasp. Nevertheless, the audience was with the band, and enjoyed the performance. It was clear for everyone that this band had very skilled individual musicians who all played with energy and eagerness for expressing themselves musically.
Review: 4 out of 6
From: Copenhagen, Denmark and US
Signed to: Presented by The Danish Jazz Association & Sun Ship
Genre and reputation: Bebop, freejazz, fusion. The young generation of the aclaimed Copenhagen jazz environment. Working in different constellations, but working well and often as Gramski.
