By Pelle Sonne Lohmann, Gaffa | Foto: Kristoffer Amlani Ulbak | | One of the most notorious livebands in Denmark, the Defectors, had only 30 minutes to warm up the audience. They’re used to let the show run wild and maybe that’s why they lacked a bit of their usual ”fuck-it-all”-attitude. But they were not entirely worn out, even though they have toured massively in as different places as South America, Germany and Norway.
The guitar draws its inspiration from surf, frequently using the vibrato, while the bas walks hypnotically in melodic and repetitive straight lines. The Farfisa organ awakens the psychedelic aspect of the Defectors and the drums changes between delicate whiskers and hard and fast drums. Singer Mort Harder’s vocal is full of personality and changes between the distorted and the vibrantly clear; it’s rock’n’roll at its finest and spices the atmosphere with a haunting sensation.
The late sixties are the Defectors great inspiration and in the songs ”C´mon c´mon”, ”Baby gimme love” and ”It´s gonna take some time” you will find the Defectors at their absolute best; fast, solid rock with circulating riffs, that will start a trance or make you dance.
Review: 4 out of 6 stars
From: Århus, Denmark
Signed to: Bad Afro Records (Copenhagen)
Genre and reputation: Garage/hard rock. The band preceded by far the Raveonettes/the Stores in introducing the new garage back in the late nineties. Many supporters in DK and Germany and a solid indie label to back them. Has toured intensively in South America and Germany.
